Our Congregation
“Our mission sends us across borders of every sort. Often we must make ourselves at home among more than one people or culture, reminding us again that the farther we go in giving the more we stand to receive.” (Constitution 2.17)

Very Rev. Hugh W. Cleary, C.S.C.The Congregation’s general administration is headquartered in Rome, and its Superior General is the Very Rev. Hugh W. Cleary, C.S.C., reelected to a second six year term in July 2004. Responsibility for the administration of religious houses and the apostolic works of the community is largely entrusted to thirteen provinces and ten districts, covering the following countries:
Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Ghana, Haiti, India, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States.

Indiana Province
The Congregation of Holy Cross is organized into provinces, including three in the United States. Besides the priests and brothers who serve within this structure, the spirituality and influence of the Holy Cross tradition is also transmitted widely by sisters who are members of groups that have their roots in the work of Blessed Basil Moreau.

Among the priests, the largest organizing structure is the Indiana Province, whose provincial superior is Rev. David T. Tyson, C.S.C. He is responsible for overseeing the Holy Cross presence at both the University of Portland and the University of Notre Dame, the parishes listed under “Parishes and Other Ministries,” missions in Chile and East Africa, André House in Phoenix, the province’s formation houses, and other assignments.

Holy Cross Sisters
In 1855, as a condition for granting official recognition to Holy Cross as a religious institute, the Holy See demanded the formal separation of the men’s and women’s communities that had grown together under Father Moreau’s leadership. Eventually, three sisters’ congregations emerged—one in France, one in the United States, and another in Canada. Nevertheless, Holy Cross priests, brothers, and sisters labor together cooperatively in many shared ministries around the world.
